Alexander Gomez studied chemistry at Lawrence University of Wisconsin, where he will obtain a bachelor’s degree in June of 2019. At Lawrence, he worked under the supervision of Dr. Stefan Debbert, investigating synthetic routes to compounds that demonstrate anti-malarial activity. In 2017, he was awarded a Lando/NSF fellowship and joined Dr. Joseph Topczewski’s group at the University of Minnesota for the summer, working on synthesizing analogues of small molecule beta-secretase 1 inhibitors. He is currently participating in a six-month internship titled “photoactivated catalysts and organic transformations” under the supervision of Dr. Nathan McClenaghan and Dr. Jean-Marc Vincent at the University of Bordeaux. Alexander will start working toward his PhD at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in July of 2019.
